Welcome to the Urban EDC Showcase! Each week, we feature one member of the EDC community and the gear they rely on every day. Want to be featured? Submit your gear photo.
Hailing from Pennsylvania, John (@adventures.of.a.sak) first got into EDC through the Swiss Army Knife Collectors group on Facebook. His all-time favorite SAK is the Victorinox Pioneer X, so much so that he bought one each for all of his seven uncles. Read on for the full story of John’s admiration for SAKs and what’s next on his gear radar (no, it’s not another SAK).
Featured Tools:
- SAK: Victorinox Pioneer X
I like it because it has all the tools of a traditional Pioneer with the addition of a great pair of scissors that I seem to always find a way to use. I chose it after seeing many great posts about the Pioneer X on Swiss Army Knife forums and Facebook groups. I typically use it to cut open packages, get jobs done around the house, and open up my daughters' toys to install new batteries.
- SAK 2: Victorinox MiniChamp
I like it because it is a limited edition MiniChamp created by Victorinox for a French Swiss Army Knife collectors club (les couteaux du soldat suisse, or LCSAS) and being that it is Alox it is much thinner than the MiniChamp with cellidor scales. I chose it after purchasing a MiniChamp with cellidor scales for a friend and realizing that I liked the toolset, but not the thickness of the tool. I keep it on my keychain so that I always have a SAK nearby (mostly to clean and file my fingernails and cut stray strings off of clothing).
- Flashlight: Thrunite Ti3
I like it because it uses an AAA battery and is small enough to fit in my leather slip alongside my Pioneer X. It is special to me because it was part of the first GAW that I won on Instagram (thanks @bear_creek_edc). I mostly use it to light up my daughters' closet while we try to find the pair of shoes that they want to wear each morning.
- Pen: Fisher Space Pen Trekker
I like it because I never have to worry about it not writing when I need it. I chose it after I lost my bullet space pen because, with the keyring, it is much harder for me to misplace it or for it to slip out of my pocket. I use it to write my to-do-lists for my personal and professional life.
- Glasses: Barner Brand Computer Glasses
I like them because they look stylish and fit my face well. I was a Kickstarter supporter of this product and I was completely impressed. I bought a pair for my wife too, but hers has prescription lenses. use them so that I don't get headaches after being in front of a screen for most of the day.
- Watch: Casio Dive Watch
I like it because it keeps time well, the bezel rotates without any annoying clicking and shows the day of the week in Spanish. I choose because I was going on a cruise to the Bahamas and didn't want to take any of my more expensive watches. I bought it just to use while swimming in the ocean on that trip and it's been my EDC watch ever since. I use it to tell time and make sure I keep complete tasks in a given time by setting the bezel to help me tell elapsed time.
- Organizer: Popov Leather EDC Pocket Armor
I like it because it helps keep my gear organized in my pocket. I chose it because it is had made out from Horween leather and holds my Swiss Army Knife, flashlight, and pen. I use it to make sure that I can always, write, light, and slice.
Background:
I enjoy spending time with my family at the zoo, at the park, and in the woods taking hikes together.
I had pocket knives when I was in middle and high school, but I didn't get into EDC until last year when I found Swiss Army Knife Collectors group on Facebook. I'm glad I found that group because from there I learned about the EDC community and #sakarmy on Instagram.
Favorite EDC Tool:
The Victorinox Pioneer X is my favorite EDC item because it is a tough and utilitarian multitool. I like it so much that I bought one for each one of my seven uncles!
What's On Your Gear Radar:
My next gear purchase will likely be a leather wallet that is custom built to hold my SAK, flashlight, and pen. It might just be from Hitch & Timber because I can't go more than a few days without browsing their site.
