A modern man of science and style, Frank (@instafr4nk) works in the field of biomedical research. Newly based in New Jersey and having grown up in Europe, he enjoys the outdoors, especially hiking and bird-watching. Read on for the full rig walkthrough of Frank's assembly of undeniably "cool gear and gadgets" and find out what 2 knives are next on his hit-list.
Featured Tools:
- Knife: Spyderco Techno
The Techno was my first non-SAK knife and one of my first acquisitions after I entered the EDC world. With its stubby blade, it's clearly not a utilitarian design, but for me, it was love at first sight and even after more than 5 years, and with many other great knives in my collection, I still carry and use it a lot.
- Pen: Peter Doering and Dirk Wanger
The Minipen was designed by German knife makers Peter Doering and Dirk Wanger. It uses the Lamy M22 refill, and while it is not as comfortable to write with as larger pens, its small size allows you to carry it in your pocket wherever you go.
- Utility Blade: Banzelcroft Customs M.E.K
The M.E.K. is a utility blade holder with a beautiful natural micarta handle. It's a simple but very functional design, a much more attractive alternative to your hardware store carpet knife with great ergonomics. I used the M.E.K. a lot during our recent move and often on weekends for crafting projects with the kids. - Card Tool: Picaroon Tools Treasure Hunt Card
The Treasure Hunt Card is a very creative credit card tool design featuring a cap lifter, a pry tip, and different wrench openings.
- Flashlight: Maratac CR123
This copper flashlight is not exactly a lightweight, but it's my favorite design among the budget-friendly flashlights. I usually carry it in my EDC bag, but for pocket carries, I prefer smaller torches.
- Dog Tag: Steel Flame Dog Tag with Koi Fish
I have been collecting Steel Flame dog tags for years. They are beautiful pieces of jewelry and always a great eye-catcher in my pocket dump pictures.
Background:
I am a scientist working in biomedical research. I was born in the US but grew up mostly in Europe. After living in Canada for the past 7 years, we recently moved to New Jersey.
I have been into Swiss Army Knives and all kinds of cool gear and gadgets since I was a kid. I only discovered the term "everyday carry" about 7 years ago when I started my journey into the EDC world on different forums and continued later on Facebook and Instagram.
I spend most of my free time with my three kids. I love being outdoors, especially hiking and bird watching. At home, I enjoy cooking and drinking craft beer.
Favorite EDC Tool:
Among all the EDC items pens are always my favorite, also because I get to use them more often than my knives, whether it is at work or home. I always carry a pen with me and from all the pens I own the Minipens are the ones I carry the most.
What's On Your Gear Radar:
The two knives that have been on my wishlist for a long time are the Spyderco Kapara and the Fox Knives Suru.
And a Saddleback leather notepad holder…
