Welcome to the Urban EDC Showcase! Each week, we feature one member from our community and the gear they rely on everyday. Want to be featured? Submit your gear photo.
For this week’s community showcase, we sit down with James (@gearetal) from London, England. James works as a property developer, and is an avid outdoorsman who also embraces technology, gear and watches. Read on for the full details of his understated daily carry, and find out how he copes with UK’s strict knife laws!
Featured Tools:
- Knife 01: Victorinox Alox Pioneer X (2016 Damascus Limited Edition)
This is about as big a knife as we can get away with in the UK, but since the addition of the X (scissors) this size has become so unbelievably useful I often carry one in addition to the Cadet or Bantam.
- Knife 02: Victorinox Alox Cadet
I always carry a Cadet or Bantam with me. They are small, light, legal and really useful for many jobs and purposes.
- Light: Prometheus QR V2 (copper)
Small, runs on easily available AAA and Nichia LED for great color rendition. What’s not to love?
- Pen 01: Fisher Space Pen
Total classic pen to just stick in a pocket and forget about until you need it. It’s tough, affordable and available in loads of colors. Also, it’s almost bomb proof.

Pen 02: Kaweco Lilliput (stainless steel)
I love this small fountain pen, especially in the tougher metals like stainless steel, copper and brass. My job as a property developer ranges from swanky offices to dirty, dusty and wet building sites. So depending on where I’m and what I’m doing, I alternate between the Lilliput and the Space Pen.
Background:
My EDC is based around having the ability to write, slice and light. Depending on where I am going and what I am planning to do, the size and type of EDC changes. Being in the UK I am sorely limited in what knives I can carry, so my collection is mostly based around the different types of Victorinox Alox knives.
When I was small, I used to worship my father’s Victorinox Swiss Champ. It was so awesome because it’s so small, yet it could do so many things. As I got older, it was the design and engineering that went into the Swiss Champ that enthralled me. This translated into my fascination with all things EDC. To me, EDC is all about blending design and quality with utility.
I grew up in and around the Wiltshire/Dorset countryside, so I love being outside and everything that comes with it. I'm also a total tech geek, gear geek and watch nerd. I love food and drink a little too much, so I try to keep fit in the gym and at home. Very few days pass without me spending a couple of hours hiking with my faithful black Labrador, Cato.
My job never really leaves me, so I’m always looking at, and thinking about, architecture and design. Master of none perhaps, but I have a lot of interests and hobbies!
Favorite EDC Tool:
It’s definitely the Victorinox Alox Cadet. It’s pocket knife perfection. I love the Pioneer X for the scissors, but my preference here in the UK is for a stealthy and understated EDC, so the extra size and weight of the Pioneer X just hold it back for me. I also always have a Victorinox Alox Classic on my key ring. It also has scissors (if only very small ones).
The pen sleeve is made by me and my wife (@makerssouth on instagram). Glad you guys like it! Very cool to see it featured here on the site!!
