Many people empty their pockets at the end of each day, often paying little attention to the items inside. Keys land on the counter, a phone gets plugged in, and a wallet goes in its usual place. These objects become part of a routine, carried more out of habit than purpose.
A more intentional approach to everyday carry means selecting each item thoughtfully for function, size, material, durability, and daily use. Over time, these choices form a kit tailored to your routine.
This article will guide you in building a pocket setup that suits your needs. We cover essential items, supporting tools, and our approach to selecting gear that works for you.
Starting With the Blade
A folding knife often forms the foundation of an everyday carry setup. It handles tasks such as opening packages, cutting cord, slicing tape, preparing food, and stripping wire. A reliable blade stays ready for use whenever needed.
So, what makes a knife worth carrying each day?
The choice of steel affects edge retention, sharpening, and corrosion resistance. Handle material influences grip, weight, and durability, while the mechanism determines how smoothly the blade opens and locks.
We collaborate with established designers to create knives in limited quantities. This approach allows us to maintain quality and offer unique designs.
The URBAN Isurus
The Isurus shows what can be achieved when compromises are set aside in knife design. We developed it with Nick Müller of NIM Knives in Germany. The result is an integral knife focused only on what matters most.
No stop pin. No backspacer. No visible clip screws. Every element serves the whole design. We even created a custom titanium tool to access the clip screw hidden within the integral handle, so nothing breaks the visual line.
The blade is made from hand-rubbed Magnacut steel, with a hardness of 62-64 on the Rockwell scale, offering notable edge retention and corrosion resistance. The pre-order version includes a Timascus pivot collar, thumb stud, and clip, each featuring unique blue and purple patterns.
Each piece is unique due to the material’s natural pattern variations. The Isurus with Satin Magnacut and Bead-Blasted Ti Integral, paired with Blackwashed Hardware, is priced at $399.
The URBAN Monaco
Our collaboration with Jens Ansø resulted in Monaco, a compact utilitarian tool. The engraved scales feature a wave motif and provide a tactile grip. Some owners use it as a worry stone between tasks.
The blade is made of M390 steel with a faux-dagger grind, sharpened on one side only. Handle options include bronze or titanium configurations. The Monaco suits those who want a compact option that still performs well on cutting tasks.
The URBAN F5.5
We designed this knife to be more compact than the custom Vox F5, featuring a 2.7-inch Magnacut blade with a modified sheepsfoot shape. The 4mm thick blade stock offers notable durability.
The flat-ground cutting edge is suitable for both precision slicing and heavier tasks. Current configurations include the URBAN Finback in Blue Denim Micarta with Darkwashed Magnacut at $329, the URBAN Castellan with Acid Etched Magnacut and Dark Bronze Titanium with Rock Texture at $299, and the URBAN Straighthawk in Polished DLC Magnacut and Polished Zirconium at $349.
Writing Instruments That Last
A pen seems simple. You pull it out, write something down, and put it back. But cheap pens fail at the worst moments. They run dry, skip across paper, break in pockets, or feel uncomfortable during extended use.
A well-made pen addresses these issues. It writes smoothly, withstands daily carry, and feels balanced in the hand.
The LynchNW x URBAN All Access Pass
Casey Lynch produces these in Spokane, Washington, in small quantities. The collaboration brings Lynch Northwest’s precision manufacturing together with our design approach. These pieces remain sought after because so few exist.
The Nottingham Tactical x URBAN TiButton Single Lock Pen
This pen comes in several configurations. Options include Battle Ground Two-Tone Ti Chaos Seigaiha with Milled Chaos Seigaiha Clip, Black Ti Cerakote Seigaiha with Milled Seigaiha Clip, and Two-Tone Black Ti Cerakote and Blue Chaos Seigaiha with Milled Chaos Seigaiha Clip. Each version features a titanium construction that withstands years of pocket carry.
Carrying Your Wallet
Many wallets accumulate cards and receipts, making them bulky and uncomfortable. Front-pocket wallets encourage carrying only the essentials.
The Lex Wallet
We first designed this wallet back in 2017 under the name Urban Organizer Mini. The updated version features a front cutout for easier card access and upgraded materials.
The leather is water buffalo hide, chosen for its toughness and durability compared to full-grain cowhide. The thread is sourced from Osaka, Japan, and uses a bonding process that fuses the glue and thread during spinning. Each wallet is handmade in the UK.
The Lex Wallet is priced at $59 and comes with a lifetime warranty. We will replace your wallet at no charge if the stitching or leather wears out from daily use.
Accessories and Tools
A pocket setup may include items beyond a knife, pen, and wallet. Flashlights are useful in low-light conditions; multitools handle tasks that require pliers or screwdrivers; pry bars open containers without damaging a blade; and fidget tools keep your hands occupied.
The Seigaiha Collection
This Japanese wave pattern is one of our signature designs. The motif is said to represent good fortune, power, and resilience. It appears across our products, from knives to patches to accessories.
Products carrying this design include the LynchNW x URBAN Best Case Scenario v2 Prybar in Shipwreck Camo Carbon at $149, the JRW Gear x URBAN Judge Bottle Opener Spinner in Titanium with Chaos Seigaiha at $140, and the Audacious Concept x URBAN Tool XS with Chaos Seigaiha starting from $119.
We make our leather goods by hand in the UK using high-quality leather.
Joining the Community
Discussing pocket setups with others who share your interests can help refine your choices. The Yamato Club serves this purpose. Our members value the community for its shared knowledge of blade steels, exotic materials, and gear selection. Membership is $9 per month.
Two membership tiers exist, named after Japanese water creatures. KAPPA, meaning “water child,” serves as the base tier. WANI, a crocodile-sea dragon that rules the oceans, provides additional benefits.
WANI members receive early access to weekly Gear Drops and Gift Shop Drops. They also receive a $99 Gift Card each month, which never expires. The tier includes access to a secret Gift Shop, private community chat, rare prototypes, a Buy/Sell/Trade channel, and 24-hour early access to our Gear Drops. The WANI tier now has over 200 members.
Membership can be canceled at any time, with no long-term commitment. A full money-back guarantee is included.
Finding What Works for You
No single pocket setup works for everyone. For example, a construction worker may need different tools than an office worker, and a subway commuter may carry different gear than a driver.
Think about your daily routine. What tasks come up regularly? Which tools would help? What sizes and weights feel comfortable to carry? These questions help guide your choices.
Start with one quality item and carry it for a few weeks. Observe when it helps and where other items might be more useful. Add or replace pieces based on actual use. Over time, your setup will reflect your needs and habits.
The goal remains straightforward. When you reach into your pocket, the right tool is there. This readiness, built through careful selection, helps you handle daily tasks more efficiently.
