Engineers rely on precision, careful material selection, and strict tolerances. Circuit boards can fail due to mismatched components, and mechanical systems can break down if parts are specified incorrectly. Logical issues lead to code errors. Precision is vital in the lab, at the desk, and in the field. The tools we carry should meet the same standards as the work we produce.
A pocket knife sitting in your front pocket is not a hobby item or a fashion accessory. For an engineer, it is a functional tool used throughout the day. You strip insulation from wire. You score materials for clean breaks. You open packages without damaging the contents. You cut zip ties in server rooms. The knife in your pocket either performs these tasks well or it does not. There is no middle ground when you need a tool to work.
We have spent years building gear that meets the needs of engineers and other professionals. Since our founding in 2015, we have collaborated with skilled makers and designers to produce knives, pocket tools, and leather goods that perform reliably.
Our focus is on delivering high-quality EDC gear for those who value practical engineering. We call this approach “Grails Within Reach” to make premium tools accessible at a reasonable price.
Why Material Science Matters in Your Pocket
Engineers understand that material selection determines performance. You would never specify aluminum where steel is required. You would never use a general-purpose alloy when the application requires a more rigid material or greater corrosion resistance. The same logic applies to the blade in your pocket.
Blade steel plays a key role in knife performance. Our knives feature Magnacut and M390, two steels recognized for their performance.
Magnacut, developed by Dr. Larrin Thomas, achieves both edge retention and corrosion resistance. M390, a powder-metallurgy steel, is valued for maintaining a sharp edge under repeated use.
Our URBAN Isurus is available in Darkwashed Magnacut with a Darkwashed Titanium Integral and Bead Blasted Titanium Hardware at $399. The URBAN Straighthawk features Stonewashed Magnacut with Stonewashed Titanium and Micro Milling at $299. The Urban Miso uses Full Hollow M390 and starts from $299. These prices are lower than those for custom knives with similar materials and workmanship.
Handling materials and hardware is crucial. Titanium is strong and lightweight, while zirconium offers durability and a unique appearance. Our URBAN Chimarra, available for pre-order, features a Hand-Rubbed Magnacut with Bronze Anodized Titanium, a Zirc Pivot Collar, and a Clip.
A second variant uses Blackwashed Magnacut with Blackwashed Titanium and Copper Pivot Collar and Backspacer. Every component serves a function. The pivot collar, backspacer, and clip are each selected and finished to perform and last.
The Jib: Engineering in a Folding Knife
The URBAN Jib is based on our F5.5, designed by Jesper Voxnaes, known for knives with clean lines and comfortable ergonomics. The Jib continues that design approach in both Linerlock and Framelock configurations.
Pre-order options include the URBAN Jib in Satin Magnacut with Green Micarta and Titanium Backspacer, as well as variants featuring Darkwashed Vanax with Antiqued Bronze Linerlock. Vanax is another high-performance steel, and its range of configurations allows you to choose based on your aesthetic and material preferences.
The engineering behind a folding knife is more complex than most people realize. Blade geometry affects cutting performance. The grind determines how the edge interacts with material. The detent ball and its spring must be calibrated to ensure the blade deploys smoothly while remaining securely closed in your pocket.
The pivot needs to be machined to tight tolerances to prevent blade play. Lock engagement must be reliable. All of these elements work together, and when any one fails, the knife becomes a frustration rather than a tool.
We collaborate with recognized designers and produce our knives in limited quantities using modern production methods. Our goal is to provide high-quality fit and finish at professional-grade prices.
Keeping Your Gear Organized
Having quality tools is useless if they are scattered across pockets and bags. You reach for your knife and find your pen. You need your pen, but come up empty because it fell out somewhere. Disorganization costs time, and time is critical when troubleshooting a system under a deadline.
The URBAN Sidekick pocket caddy solves this problem. We spent considerable time developing it because we found that many users prefer a slimmer, simpler option. Nobody wants a bulging front pocket.
The Sidekick has two main slots, one for your primary tool, like a knife, multi-tool, or flashlight, and another for your everyday pen. The slim and compact profile slides into your pocket without creating an unsightly bulge.
Durability was a primary concern during development. All stress points on the URBAN Sidekick are secured by double-capped rivets for extra strength. We use the saddle-stitch method with heavy-duty waxed polycord from Maine Thread Company. This approach is labor-intensive but produces absolute reliability.
The leather is premium full-grain Dublin leather from Horween Leather Company in Chicago, one of the world's most respected and oldest tanneries. This leather is robust, supple, and durable. It will develop a unique patina over time and with use, becoming more attractive the more you carry it.
All of our EDC leather goods are handmade in the UK using carefully sourced materials. The threads are sourced from Osaka, Japan, and produced via a bonding process to achieve a smooth, strong finish. Each leather good ships in a gift box, and we offer a lifetime warranty on workmanship.
Pens, Tools, and Collaborative Pieces
Engineers document work constantly. You sketch ideas on napkins. You take notes during meetings. You sign off on specifications and change orders. A pen that skips, bleeds, or runs dry at the wrong moment is a small failure that adds up over time.
Our pen collaborations include the Nottingham Tactical x URBAN TiButton Single Lock Pen series. These are available in various configurations, including Black Ti Cerakote Chaos Seigaiha with Milled Chaos Seigaiha Clip. Nottingham Tactical builds pens to exacting standards, and our collaboration brings their precision together with our design sensibility.
The LynchNW x URBAN All Access Pass is a collaborative piece designed and made by Casey Lynch in Spokane, Washington. These pieces combine Lynch Northwest’s precision with our design approach. Production is limited, and demand regularly exceeds supply.
Additional accessories include the JRW Gear x URBAN Judge Bottle Opener Spinner in Titanium with Chaos Seigaiha for $140, and the Audacious Concept x Urban Tool XS with Chaos Seigaiha, starting at $119. These pieces are designed for practical use and reflect our focus on functional design.
The Seigaiha Collection
Our Seigaiha Collection features the traditional Japanese wave motif. This design appears across different product lines, including collaborative pieces and accessories. For those who prefer consistent aesthetics in their carry, the Seigaiha pattern connects knives, pens, tools, and accessories.
Weekly Drops and Community
Each Wednesday at 12 PM Pacific Time, we release a new lineup of exclusive EDC gear. Pocket knives, flashlights, lanyard beads, prybars, multitools, fidgets, worry stones, challenge coins, EDC pens, and other everyday carry items. The weekly schedule keeps inventory fresh and gives collectors regular opportunities to add pieces to their rotation.
For deeper involvement, our Yamato Club has been recognized by our members as the “best EDC group in the world.” Membership costs $9 per month with no long-term commitment and a 100% money-back guarantee. The club has two tiers named after Japanese mythical water creatures. Kappa, meaning “water child,” is the basic tier. Wani refers to a crocodile-sea dragon who controls the tides and rules the oceans.
Becoming a Wani ensures Early Access to both our weekly Gear Drops and Yamato Club Gift Shop Drops. Wani members receive a $99 Gift Card each month, and the cards never expire. This makes the membership essentially free if you are already buying EDC gear. The Wani tier currently has over 200 members.
