When Kirk (@capt.kirklucas) received his first knife – courtesy of a good friend and the astute advice of the storekeeper – it eventually set him down a path of being a YouTube Video Editor within the EDC community. Read on for the full story and find out which knife it was and what's next on Kirk's gear radar.
What's in your carry?
- Knife: Benchmade Bugout w/ titanium scales
My first ever knife that got me into EDC was the Ranger Green Bugout gifted to me by a good friend. For my current carry though, I have the Blue Bugout with Rockscale Design titanium scales just to make everything match. I love everything about the knife: the blade shape, the size, the weight. It's such a simple knife but it checks all the boxes for me.
- Watch: Seiko SKX007J w/ Strapcode Steel Bracelet
There's a huge following around this watch, and I get it. It's affordable, looks amazing, and is a great entry to the world of automatic watches. The Strapcode bracelet elevates the watch even further into premium territory. I wear this watch every single day and I will continue to wear it every day for the foreseeable future.
- Wallet: Bellroy Apex Slim Sleeve Wallet
Before I even knew about EDC, I've always been obsessed with wallets. I've always carried slim wallets and I made sure I carried as little as possible. The Bellroy Apex wallet is everything I would ever need in a wallet.
First of all, it looks amazing. The use of leather but with a clean, modern, stitchless design just speaks to my soul. The use of magnets to keep everything closed also makes using the wallet very satisfying to use. For how slim it is, it surprisingly carries a lot of cards, max of 8 which is a lot more than I need.
- Carabiner: James Brand Holcombe
I love James Brand. In the EDC world, it's refreshing to see a clean modern aesthetic for gear. The Holcombe is everything I need it to be. A slim carabiner with a functional screwdriver/pry-bar.
- Coin: Pete's Pirate Life Pirate Coin v2
This one is particularly special. At the time of writing, this coin is still unreleased and is the only thing that breaks the look of my carry because it's so sick.
What's your story?
I'm a Video Editor based in Toronto and I work for a filmmaking/photography YouTuber who also happens to have a side brand in the EDC community.
I'm still not sure how I ended up where I am honestly. I studied architecture for 3 years and went to film school for 1 year but I don't think I've applied any of that knowledge in my current career path.
Everything I know now, I've learned on my own on the Internet. I've always been interested in filmmaking but I was never a huge fan of the whole big-budget side of filmmaking so Youtube really got my attention. After being a fan of a particular YouTuber, I now work for one, which is amazing.
I've always been very picky about my wallet and my keys but I never knew that there was a whole community around this until 2 years ago. I got into it when my boss and good friend bought me a Benchmade Bugout.
We went to the knife store because he wanted to get a knife for his dad, but before leaving the store he told me to pick a knife as well. At that time, I didn't know anything about knives and obviously I didn't know where to start.
The store owner told us that the Bugout was a popular option and he was having a hard time keeping it in stock, so I just blindly went with that. Looking back now, it was the perfect knife to start with. I still continue to carry the Bugout, despite owning more expensive knives like the Benchmade 940 or the Grimsmo Norseman.
When I'm not working and editing videos. I like to work on my Instagram page, which 'encourages' me to not slack on my photography.
Favorite EDC Tool?
The Benchmade Bugout. It's what got me into this whole thing. I've talked about it too many times now that there's nothing else to say.
What's On Your Gear Radar?
You know what? As much as I love my SKX watch and the automatic movement. I kinda want a simple Casio G-Shock square. I know it makes sense to want a more expensive watch but I don't know, the G-Shock square is calling out to me.
