For this week's community showcase, we're thrilled to talk to Mark (@mmans0311) from Boston, Massachusetts. Mark is currently an equipment operator for the Massachusetts Port Authority. Background:
My name is Mark Mansfield and I was born and raised in Charlestown (hence the Bunkerhill Militia). I served in the USMC infantry from 2003-2007 and I'm currently working for the Massachusetts Port Authority as an equipment operator.
I don't really recall how I first got into EDC. However, I do remember carrying a knife when I was younger. Ironically, it was not for the functional reasons, and was more for the sake of looking cool.
When I was a kid I visited Santa's Village in Maine with the family. And being a theme park, they had a gift shop and there was a basket of SAK styled multi-tools. My mom warned me to stay away from them. Naturally, I reached into the basket and sliced my hand wide open. Those were some of my first memories of knives and tools.
When I'm not working, I spend most of my time with my family. My hobbies include working on knives as well as making custom handkerchiefs (called Shank Hank), knife pouches. I'm also the proud creator of the original knife burrito.
Favorite EDC Tool:
The Ferrum Forge x Gavko Knives Mako is hands down my favorite tool. In my humble opinion, it's the perfect knife. The ergonomics of this knife is amazing and it just seems to melt in your hands. And being a ball bearing flipper, it has a very fast and smooth deployment. So it's definitely fun to play with and scores very high on the fidget factor.
Originally, I had zero intentions of owning this knife being it was slightly "out of my league" price wise. Before I owned the Mako, I was using a FFKW Ferox for only about 3 days before I lost it. The Mako was its replacement, and the rest is history.
