Welcome to the Urban EDC Showcase! Each week, we feature one member from our community and the gear they rely on everyday. Want to be featured? Submit your gear photo.
For this week's community showcase, we have Orlando (@bo_lando77) from San Diego who has been working as a veterinary technician for the past 8 years. Orlando is a committed family man, and spends his free time at the zoo or the beach with his family. Read on for the full details of his highly utilitarian and functional daily carry!
Featured Tools:
- Knife 01: Kershaw Knockout
I carry this knife non-stop. It's the perfect knife to use and abuse without feeling bad. After all, that's what tools are made for - to use them. I try to rotate my knives from time to time, but the Knockout always finds its way back into my pocket.
- Knife 02: Camillus BSA Cub Scout Knife
This vintage knife is filled with history. I found it while cleaning out my dad's garage. He had it refurbished and gave it to me for my 18th birthday. That's where my knife collection started. It has an old-school carbon steel blade and screwdriver. For an old knife, it certainly feels and cuts like new.
- Light: Fenix E11
This is my everyday pick for a flashlight because it's so compact, bright and it comes at a great price. I'm a HUGE Fenix light fan. I've tried others brands but when you find one that fits your needs, you stick with it. I've been carrying this light with me for the last 4 years and it's still shining bright.

Watch: Hamilton Khaki Field Automatic
This was a birthday gift from my wife, and the significance of this watch is beyond special. The craftsmanship of the movement and the overall look to it is amazing. I can wear it with jeans and a t-shirt, or I can wear it with a tux. It's just so versatile. I mostly wear it with rugged NATO straps though. It's an exceptional piece of gear and number one watch pick. - Writing Tools: Pilot Metropolitan / Pentel GraphGear 500 (0.9MM)
I write a lot at work, and I can only use black ink. The pilot pen is awesome because it never leaks and the nib is so smooth. I use the pencil mostly for sketching.
- Sketchbook: Global Arts Pocket Sketchbook
I carry this with me so that whenever the mood strikes, or when I need to draw or sketch my ideas - I've got it on hand.
Background:
My name is Orlando and I'm 32 years young. I live in San Diego with my wife, Ashley, and my 4-month-old daughter, Olivia. I work in the veterinary field as a veterinary technician, and have been doing that for the last 8 years. When I'm not at work, I'm at the zoo or just hanging out by the beach with my wife and daughter.
I've been doing the whole EDC thing since I turned 18. It started with an old pocket knife my dad gave me and it just grew from there. I remember my dad telling me that "a man should always have a good knife, a good light, but a great watch". He was the one who got me into collecting watches as well. For me, a watch is the most important EDC piece I can carry. Time is the most valuable thing someone can waste. A watch on my wrist reminds me not to.
Other things I'm into are sketching comic characters, reading graphic novels and playing the guitar. I'm a huge comic nerd. In my opinion, Batman is the EDC king. His utility belt has EVERYTHING. We are mere amateurs compared to Batman and his gear.
Favorite EDC Tool:
As far as my favorite EDC tool goes, I would have to pick my Hamilton Khaki watch. The reason why I didn't pick my Luminox or Suunto is because their battery will run out sooner or later. In contrast, with just a quick wind and or movement of my wrist - my automatic Hamilton will always start. It's just so reliable and it looks stylish too.
I have been carrying gear of all types since I was young before there was a term E D C .
My grandfather always carried a good knife a bandana and other gear and he started me , with my first pocket knife " Case".He would have definitely been what we now call a gear junky.
