Welcome to the Urban EDC Showcase! Each week, we feature one member of the EDC community and the gear they rely on every day. Want to be featured? Submit your gear photo.
Kevin (@christiansdad) from Greensboro, North Carolina owns and runs a Non-Emergency Medical Transportation Company. In his free time, Kevin enjoys collecting, reading, spending time with his family. We sit down with him to find out how he first got into EDC, as well as to learning how he uses his EDC in a daily setting.
Featured Tools:
- Knife 01: Chris Reeve Umnumzaan
I will generally rotate a full-sized pocket knife every day, so for this picture and for this day, the Umnumzaan found its way into my pocket. I like it because of its size, form and function. Also, this particular configuration (with the large pivot) has been discontinued.
- Knife 02: Spyderco Techno
This Spyderco Techno features a full titanium build. I always have a small carry blade of some kind (in this picture and day, a Spyderco Techno). For me, the smaller knife is probably the most used of any other type of blade that I may carry. Everyone wants to carry a larger knife, and I am no exception to this rule; however, my job doesn't really dictate that I need a larger knife and the smaller one actually performs just as well.
- Flashlight: Maratac AAA Ti Flashlight
The Maratac Flashlight is a new product offering from County Comm - I've dealt with them for several years and they always seem to offer items that are sometimes a little "different, or harder to find" than some of the other companies I do business with.
It seems as though over the last several years, makers of all types of products (including flashlights), have chosen to go "small or compact" in their offerings. County Comm recently introduced the Maratac Polished Titanium Rev 4 AAA flashlight and I had been wanting a titanium torch. It is perfect for my daily EDC; everyone needs to carry a flashlight of some type, as I find myself using quite often in my medical transportation business.
- Pen: Prometheus Writes Alpha
This is a Prometheus Write Alpha pen machined from solid titanium. I always carry a pen because I’m always taking notes, so it’s truly a daily needed item.
- Fidget Toy: SCAM Design "Torqbar" + Steel Flame Killbox "Ring Spin"
The fidget toy market has really taken over the EDC community. It seems as though someone new is making something different every day. I am sure that this may be simply a small fad of some kind, but at the moment, I currently carry my personal favorite, the SCAM Design “Torqbar” and also I had just received the Steel Flame “Ring Spin” a day or so before this picture was taken. In my opinion, both of these companies make the best spinners on the market hands down.
- Pry Bar: TT PockeTTools
And last but certainly not least, is my pry-bar/multi-tool. There are actually a lot of practical office uses for this small tool in my office.
Background:
Getting into the EDC game seemed a natural progression for me the more I got into custom/high-end knives. Social media has played such a large and pivotal role for many of these smaller knife makers, many of whom would never be able to advertise or get their product/name out into the market without the help of Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest and a few others.
And as I began to follow and collect certain makers, I became drawn to some of their accessories that some others began to incorporate into their pictures. For me, as I am sure others on here as well, I was already "EDC'ing" several of these items. I just didn't know there was now a name for it. I would have to say that I first starting getting into serious 'EDC'ing" about 4 years ago.
Favorite EDC Tool:
For me, it always seems to be about a pen, flashlight and a small pocket knife. The other items that I may carry on a daily basis are usually factored into what kind of day I know I'll be having. Long meetings, spinner toys… You get the idea.
I can almost always pinpoint a time in each one of my days, that I always seem to be reaching for my pen, a flashlight and it never fails, someone will always ask, "Hey, does anyone have a knife?".
