As a field technician, Dave (@alienated_edc) is always on the road and interacting with customers. As such, he has developed a unique everyday carry that is highly functional yet discreet and non-threatening. Read on for the full rig rundown and to find out how Dave puts his one-of-a-kind carry to real-world use.
Featured Tools:
- Knife: Enigma Knives Classic 01
A knife is a frequently used tool for my job. I’m a field technician, which means I work on location at my customer’s shops. Therefore I usually choose to carry something non-threatening. This Enigma fits the bill perfectly. It’s also very good for slicing apples.
- Flashlight: Olight S Mini
This is my Mini in bead blasted titanium. I’m constantly looking into dark crevices or crawling underneath machinery. This flashlight is small, powerful, and has the best user interface I’ve come across.
- SAK: Robert Lessard Deluxe Compact Tinker
I love Swiss Army knives, and Robert’s work is the finest I’ve encountered. Even though I have a tool bag with me for my job, I find it handy to keep this close by (particularly for the scissors).
- Pen: Kyle’s Kustom Pens
I always keep my Micarta rollerball nearby for jotting down notes. Kyle is my favorite pen maker, and I have several pens by him.
- Wallet: Arc Company
This is a custom Outlander wallet. I had (and loved) the original Outlander wallet by Arc, but asked them to make me a version with a pocket added to the outside. Now I have even more room for cards, cash and receipts (vital for work), all in a compact package.
- Comb: Hudson Design & Manufacturing
I have a beard and fairly curly hair, so a comb is a must. This Tradesman Comb by Hudson Design is great because it's durable, compact and has a pocket clip.
- Hank: Handmade
Another vital piece of my EDC. Frequently used for wiping my phone, sunglasses, knife, and hands. Also handy for opening filthy gas station restroom doors when they’ve run out of paper towels.
- Worry Beads: Russian Worry Beads
These were an eBay score. I’ve had an odd fascination with beads most of my life and actually have a small collection of rosaries, worry beads, and other prayer beads I’ve picked up on my travels to Europe and Asia.
Background:
I’ve been EDCing in some form or another ever since my dad gave my first pocket knife at age 5. Around age 12 I discovered my love for pens and watches, and it snowballed from there.
EDC is my main hobby right now, as it’s fun and functional. I’m a husband and father of a three-year-old, so I have almost no free time. In the past, I’ve studied martial arts (I have a black belt in Kenpo Karate), made an independent feature film, and I also used to make EDC handkerchiefs.
Favorite EDC Tool:
I’d have to say the worry beads are my favorite. My work territory is the whole west coast, so I spend a fair amount of time commuting. These beads are a great mindless activity for when I’m sitting in traffic.
Next On Your Gear Radar:
Next on my list will probably be a Big Idea Design Titanium Pocket Tool. I just lost mine going through an airport (wasn’t confiscated, it fell out of my bag).
