Welcome to the Urban EDC Showcase! Each week, we feature one member of the EDC community and the gear they rely on every day. Want to be featured? Submit your gear photo.
From the southern part of Germany, we talk to Uwe (@rule_number_9) who earns his living as a software engineer and developer. Ruthlessly efficient and effective in both his choice of EDC and words, Uwe has a preference for overbuilt folders and small, 'tanky' fixed blades. Read on for the full rig rundown, and find out more about Uwe's EDC philosophy.
Featured tools:
- Knife: Strider DB (3V)
I switch between folders and small fixed blades that I can just toss into my front pocket. The Strider DB is one of the strongest EDC fixed blades I've ever owned. Tough and perfect for urban environments. No pry bar needed when I carry this one.
- SAK: Victorinox Pioneer
I carry a SAK at all times. Perfect multitool for me and very good in situations where you don't want to scare people whipping out your primary blade or to hand to people who ask you for something to cut. Everybody knows how to handle a SAK.
- Pliers: Knipex Cobra XS
Very handy little pliers that you don't feel in your pocket. There's always a use and a need for pliers.
- Lighter: BIC
I used to carry a Zippo bit the BIC is just more trustworthy and doesn't need to be maintained.
- Pocket ashtray: Maker unknown.
I don't want to throw my fags everywhere and leave dirty traces. That's why I always carry that pocket ashtray. It costs 99 cents and held up for over a year already under constant use.
- Pen: Fisher Space Pen.
I need a pen all the time. This is one of the best and most functional.
- Hank: Little Hanks.
Used a lot to wipe off my blades and my sweat.
- Key organizer: Hades Key Cage
Because I hate when keys make rattling sounds.
- Wallet: Pure EDC
Nice, small and minimalist. Everything I need and more.
- Watch: G-Shock
Not pictured is my watch which currently is a G-Shock Mudmaster, but as you see I actually don't care a lot for watches. 😉
My story:
My name is Uwe and I live in a small town in the southern part of Germany with my wife and my son. I will turn 50 years this winter (hopefully 😉). I earn my living as a software developer.
I started using and collecting knives when I was a kid already. Have 2 or 3 pieces left from back then. Lots of knives went through my hands over the years from cheap to very expensive. My collection is always relatively small though.
I am not a collector in the sense of hoarding knives. I don't display them at home either. I use everything I have. So I trade or sell everything that doesn't become a favorite.
Currently I have 8 folders and 7 fixed blades in my rotation. I love big overbuilt folders and small tank-like fixed blades. Don't like the fancy stuff though. Got to be tactical. I just like it that way.
My hobbies are hiking, traditional archery, working in the garden. The biggest hobby are knives though. I love to share pics on my Instagram and to get in contact with other knife enthusiasts from all over the world.
Favorite EDC tool:
My favorite pieces are from Strider, Medford and Benchmade.
What's on my gear radar:
My next purchase might be a Medford Praetorian. I already had a few but sold them. Missing them quite a bit so I will add one again.
